Family story is that he died from one of two causes. The first story is that he was driving the trolley across the Harrison Avenue bridge and saw someone jump into the Passaic River that winter and he stopped the trolley and jumped in the river to save the person who was trying to commit suicide. Charles died of pneumonia as a result of his lifesaving efforts. The second story is that he was involved in a trolley accident. While driving down Market Street in Newark, he failed to stop for a railroad crossing. The trolley was hit by a train and many people were hurt. He was put in jail for neglect. His days in the cold damp jail brought on the tuberculosis that he later died from.
