  • Notes
    • In a letter dated 1 March 1828 from Christian Ignatius Latrobe to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe, he refers to Charles Joseph Latrobe as 'Joseph'. He signed his last name with one word - not two.

He was an author writing "Alpine Stock", "Sketches of Swiss Scenery and Manners", "The Pedestrian or Rambler in Italy" and "The Rambler in North America" which was written from travels taken by him with Washington Irving. He also wrote, "The Rambler in Mexico". In a letter from Peter Latrobe to John H. B. Latrobe from London dated 12 April 1830, Peter Latrobe refers to two copies of Joseph's Alpenstock - one of which was given to Peter by Mary Elizabeth Latrobe. In another letter dated 4 December 1830 from Peter Latrobe to John H. B. Latrobe, he comments that Joseph's Alpenstock is selling pretty well. Peter signed the letter with his last name in one word - not two.

In a letter dated 16 April 1833 from Joseph to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe written from St. Augustine, FL, he wrote that he had visited Charleston and saw young W. Roosevelt (?) and had visited Savannah. He signed his last name with one word, Charles J. Latrobe.

In a letter dated 23 June 1833 from Joseph to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe written from Bethlehem, Pa. He described a visit to Lititz, a Moravian settlement 7 miles north of Lancaster, Pa. He signed the letter, Charles J. Latrobe.

In a letter dated 8 August 1833 from Joseph to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe written from New York describing his visit to Saratoga. He had caught a cold and described how it had progressed to a cough, etc. He wrote that he drank cream of tartar lemonade the first day, took pill and barley water the next day, chamomile tea and felt better, but not strong. Today he drank claret wine and a strong drink, absinthe! Again he signed the letter as Charles J. Latrobe.

In a letter dated 30 November 1833 from Joseph to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe he wrote about Margaret Eleanora Latrobe dying in August 1833. he also wrote about Indians and made a sketches of one. He signed the letter, Charles J. Latrobe.

In a letter dated 29 March 1834 from Joseph to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe written from Mexico City during Holy Week. He wrote as follows: "The road and avenues swarm with robbers so that to preserve my amusement of sketching, I am forced to go around armed to the teeth!". He also described an earthquake with 80 aftershocks.

He was the first Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to 1854 after being Superintendent of the colony of Port Philip for eleven years.

He was the founder of Australian branch of the Latrobe family.
