    • John was a student at the College of William and Mary, 1838-40, and was a civil engineer. during the first year of the Civil War he was engaged in erecting the defenses around Richmond, VA. He was appointed a second lieutenant in the Engineer Corps, C.S.A., 1 Aug 1862, and was promoted to captain 12 Oc 1863. After the war he continued his profession in Culpeper Court House, VA and served as mayor of the city.
