  • Notes 
    • John was a student at the College of William and Mary in law in 1803 and was admitted to the bar in 1813. He practiced in Chesterfield Co., VA and was prosecuting attorney for the 5th Virginia Circuit in 1818. He was a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention of 1829-30 and served in the U.S. Congress from 1835-45, being chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1843-45. He represented Chesterfield County in the House of Delegates, 1846-48, dying in office.
