    • John Burton Thompson Jr. served as Commonwealth Attorney of Kentucky; was a member of the Kentucky Senate, 1829-33, and of the House of Representatives, 1835 and 1837; was lieutenant governor of Kentucky, 1851-55; a member of Congress, 1840-43 and 1847-51; and a US Senator, 1853-59. He was sergeant-at-arms of the "Sovereignty Convention" held at Russellville, KY, in Nov 1861 at which an ordnance of succession was passed and a provisional government was established.
