Notes |
- Thomas Wilson Napier enlisted in 1846 as a corporal in the 2nd Kentucky Volunteers during the Mexican War. He was soon promoted to 2nd lieutenant and fought in the Battle of Buena Vista. In 1848, he represented Lincoln Co. in the Kentucky House of Representatives, and was county judge from 1853-1862. He was quartermaster of the 1st Kentucky Cavalry and lieutenant colonel of the 6th Kentucky Cavalry, C.S.A. His unit was part of Confederate President Jefferson Davis' body guard after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox and was captured with Davis in Georgia in May 1865. In 1866 he was elected sheriff of Lincoln Co. He was shot and killed behind Standford Presbyterian Church by 17 year old Samuel Holmes, who was drunk and disturbing the peace. A $1000 reward was posted but Sam Holmes was never captured. In Sep 2009 a ceremony was held at Napier's grave in the Buffalo Springs Cem where he was honored for being the only Lincoln Co. sheriff killed in the line of duty.
