- He was a student at Princeton College when that institution was broken up by the British. He afterward completed his studies at William and Mary College, and for several years practiced law. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature from the District of Kentucky. After Kentucky became a state, he was three times elected a Senator in Congress and continued as a member of the Senate until 1805.
He was a warm personal friend of Thomas Jefferson.
