Notes |
- Charles Hazlehurst Latrobe was born and Baltimore, MD and educated at St. Mary's College. He studied Civil Engineering under his father and in later life became prominent in his profession, particularly in designing bridges, some of which were in Baltimore. He was commissioned by the Peruvian Government to build the then highest bridge in the world at Verrugas. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was appointed as First Lieutenant in the Engineers of the Confederate States of America on 6 June 1862. He was paroled by the United States Government on 17 June 1865.
In the second half of the nineteenth century, Baltimore was fortunate to be the home of an eminent and prolific engineer, Charles Hazlehurst Latrobe. As grandson of famous architect, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, and son of railroad engineer, Benjamin Henry Latrobe, Jr., Charles lived up to the genius and ability that described his family. His engineering projects not only used the current technology, but were marveled over for their beauty and grace. At a time that saw cities growing ugly and dirty from industrial and commercial wastes, Latrobe built bridges that seemed delicate as lace and then landscaped the surrounding area to complement the construction. His bent for beauty was further embodied as he became more and more involved with the parks in Baltimore. A list of Latrobe's engineering feats read like a beautification plan for Baltimore.
Charles Latrobe was appointed Chief Engineer of the Jones Falls Commission in 1875 by his cousin, Mayor Ferdinand Claiborne Latrobe. Serving the city for twenty-four years, he designed and built the great retaining walls along Jones Falls and designed and constructed the iron bridges across Jones Falls at St. Paul Street, Calvert Street and Guilford Avenue. Latrobe also laid out the terraced gardens along Mount Royal Avenue and was in charge of the improvements and expansion of Mount Royal, Druid Hill and Patterson Parks. In 1891, Latrobe designed the Patterson Park Observatory, nicknamed the "Pagoda" which is still standing today.
Although all of Latrobe's bridges had to be replaced in the twentieth century to handle modern traffic, concrete reinforced steel could not match the gracefulness of his arched bow-string trusses. (Note: The last of the aforementioned bridges, the one over Calvert Street was replaced in late 1996.) Well into his later years, he continued as a bridge builder and as consulting engineer for Baltimore's proposed sewage system. Latrobe continued to serve Baltimore as engineer and superintendent of public parks until a short time before his death in 1902.
He was born at the home of Mrs. Greetham on Calvert Street, and baptized at St. Paul's Church in Baltimore.
