  • Notes
    • Major Joseph Croshaw probably was educated in England and had legal training, for he appeared often as attorney in the County Court. A pronouced Royalist, he had no love for Cromwell and his objection to the succession of Richard Cromwell, 1659/60, when serving as a member of the House of Burgesses from York Co., brought about his suspension by Governor Mathews from his office as Justice of York Co.,

The first of Major Croshaw's numerous patents for land was that for 600 acres in Charles River (later York) Co., dated 9 August 1637. He lived at "Poplar Neck" on the south side of York River, which tract of 1000 acres patented by him 10 December 1651 is described as across from land of Richard Croshaw. His will dated 10 April 1667 was proved in York Co. 29 July 1667.

Joseph II (April 1667-8 August 1682) born less than a month before his father's death was devised the bulk of his estate with reversion to the Wests if he died childless. This occurred and the Croshaw land passed into West ownership.1 PROP 2 DATE 9 AUG 1637 2 PLAC owned 600 acres 1 _ELEC 2 DATE 1656 2 PLAC VA House of Burgessess 1 _ELEC 2 DATE BET. 1659 - 1660 2 PLAC VA House of Burgessess
