Notes |
- Richard's place in the family tree has not yet been established. Claiborne Pedigree (Lynchburg, 1900) places him here although he appears to have been born 5 years after his father's death.
He was commissioned a first lieutenant in the 1st Continental Artillery on 13 Jan 1777, on 18 Nov 1777 became brigade major and aide-de-camp to Gen. Nathanael Greene and from 1780 to 1782 was Deputy Quartermaster General of the Continental Army. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. He traveled to London were he stayed for a number of years and was offered a position by the Polish Treasury Commission to superintend the cultivation of tobacco in that country. He returned to eventually move to Mississippi Territory and was postmaster at Washington, MS, until 1804 and then Clerk to the Board of Commissioners of the Territory. He served in New Orleans as private secretary to Gov. William C. C. Claiborne in 1805-06; was appointed judge of Rapides Parish 1 Jan 1808, and reappointed 11 Dec 1811; was appointed clerk of the U. S. District Court at New Orleans, 10 Feb 1815; and was then appointed judge of the U. S. District Court for Western Louisiana.
