Notes |
- John served as member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1797 to 1801 and 181315. He was a member of the Virginia Senate from 1804 until 1808. He was the major general of the Virginia militia in the War of 1812 and held field command of all state forces. Following the war, he was appointed United States marshal for the eastern district of Virginia, 23 Apr 1821. He was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of U.S. Representative Peterson Goodwyn and served from 21 Apr 1818 to 3 Mar 1819.
