- In late November 1806, Meriwether Lewis (the Lewis of Lewis and Clark fame) was visiting in Fincastle, Virginia where he met Letitia Breckinridge, Letitia Breckinridge Gamble's mother, and was smitten with her and tried to court her, but to no avail. His brother, Rueben Lewis wrote home describing Miss Lettissa Breckenridge as one of the most beautiful women that he had ever seen, both as to form and features.
She died in New York while on a visit there with her husband. She was buried in New York and removed from the grave in New York City and transferred to Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore and buried 23 May, 1867.
