Notes |
- James William Claiborne was educated at Richmond College and enrolled in the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1846, receiving his M.D. degree in 1848. He went to California with his brother Gilbert in 1849, sailing by way of Cape Horn. He practiced at Jamestown, CA, for 9 years and was a justice of the peace. He returned to Virginia in 1858, becoming a physician in Petersburg, VA. He enlisted 19 Apr 1861 as a private in Company E, 12th Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. He was appointed assistant surgeon, 14 Sep 1861, promoted to surgeon, 1 Mar 1862, and served until paroled at Appomattox Court House, 9 Apr 1865.
