Notes |
- Christian Ignatius Latrobe was a Bishop of the Moravian Church. He wrote a book entitled, "Latrobe's Visit to the South of Africa" 1815-1816. He composed three Sonatas for the pianoforte which he dedicated to Joseph Haydn, and over one hundred vocal works. Four of these lengthy works were entitled, "Lord of Life! Now Sweetly Slumber", "How Shall a Mortal Song Aspire", "Psalm 51" and "We Praise Thee, Oh! God". The Sonatas were 'modernized' by Professor Charles E. Stevens of East Carolina University. The facilities of The Moravian Music Foundation in Winston Salem, N.C. were made available for this work. The vocal works were edited by Ewald V. Nolte, Director of The Moravian Music Foundation. Copies of these works were in the Music Library of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In addition, it is known that he composed two duets and eight arias as well as clarinet concertos. There are other museums and libraries in the United States, Great Britain and Germany where his works may be found.
In a letter dated 5 December 1820 from Christian Ignatius Latrobe to Mary Elizabeth Latrobe responding to the news of Benjamin Henry Latrobe's death, he signed his last name with one word - not two. It is unclear if/when he began spelling his name as La Trobe, however, all of his descendants use the two-word spelling.
