- Maj.Gen. John Buchanan Floyd represented Washington Co. in the Virginia House of Delegates, 1847-49, and served as Governor of Virginia, 1849-52. In 1857, President James Buchanan appointed him Secretary of War. He resigned in Dec 1860, joined the Confederate Army and was commissioned Brigadier General, Mar 1861. He was relieved of duty in Mar 1862 following the surrender of Fort Donelson, TN, but in Aug 1862, he was appointed Major General in command of the Provisional Army of Virginia. His health soon failed and he died a year later.
